Chapter Thirteen

When Max arrived at the shop early Saturday morning, she felt like she’d just left. It wasn’t that far from the truth. She remembered telling Keiko it wouldn’t take long to hand wash the silk tulle, but she’d decided it would be easier if she cut the skirt pieces first rather than trying to wash twenty yards of fabric all in one piece.

The tulle was draped all around the shop, over towel racks, chairs, and mannequins, and Max was happy to learn that it had dried overnight. She pulled the pieces down and folded them neatly in a stack.

The first bride they would be seeing that morning wanted an avant-garde wedding gown, according to Heidi. The bride had made the request when she made her appointment. Max wasn’t exactly sure what she meant, but she prepared as best she could by pulling all the edgier and more daring gowns from the showroom and the overflow rack upstairs. She hung them outside one of the dressing rooms.

Heidi picked a good day to arrive early, considering their full schedule. “Hello, I’m here,” she called out.

Max emerged from the dressing room area. “Good morning. We have a busy day today.”

“What would you like me to do first?” Heidi asked.

“Let’s go in the office and go over the appointment list,” Max said. “You wrote a note next to the one o’clock appointment that said ‘dog’.”

“Yes. She said she needed a dress for her dog.”

“Is the dog getting married?” Max asked.

Heidi started to chuckle, and her chuckle became a guffaw. She seemed to think this was the funniest thing she’d heard in a while. Once she’d composed herself, she wiped a tear from her eye. “No, of course not. The dog is a bridesmaid.”

Max stared at Heidi, trying to understand why a dog bride was hilarious while a dog bridesmaid was not. “We don’t make dog dresses.”

“But I do,” Heidi said. “I’d be happy to make one to match the other bridesmaids' dresses. I mean, if it’s okay with you.”

“You make dog dresses?” Somehow this didn’t surprise Max.

“Yes,” Heidi said. “Well, usually costumes. You know. For Halloween and parades. Things like that. I told you how crafty I was when you interviewed me, remember?”

“Yes, I do. Well, from here on out, you are responsible for all the custom dog dress requests.”

“Really?” Heidi clapped her hands in excitement and followed Max into the office. There was a new bounce in her step. Did she think dog dresses were going to be a regular thing at Wedding Belles? Max surely hoped not.

Heidi looked over Max’s shoulder as she opened the appointment scheduling software. She was about to ask Heidi about a cryptic note next to one of the entries, when the front door gave a jingle, and Max heard a familiar voice.

“I’ll get it,” Heidi said.

“That’s okay.” Max stood up and headed back to the showroom. “I recognize that voice.”

She opened the front door and was greeted with a big grin. “Hi, River.” She stepped aside to let him enter.
